1486681 Light guides STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 13 May 1975 20079/75 Addition to 1458896 Heading G2J A method of terminating a plastics sheathed optical fibre comprises inserting the fibre 2 down the bore of a metal ferrule 1; observing through a magnifying optical system the position of the axis of the fibre core 2 with respect to the axis of the ferrule; adjusting radially arranged grub screws 5 engaged in the wall of the ferrule to hold the fibre with its core axis aligned with the axis of the outer surface of the ferrule 1; filling the interior of the ferrule with a potting compound 6 and curing it and lapping and polishing the end of the fibre and the ferrule. To connect two fibres, the ferrules 1 are butted together end-to-end on a common axis. Index matching liquid may be used. In a multi-fibre connector, a plurality of pairs will be so joined. Materials The plastics cladding 3 may be polyethylene terephthalate resin, polypropylene, polythene, polyvinylidene - chloride or polyamide. The potting compound 6 may be epoxy. The ferrule 1 may be of steel and the grubscrews 5 of nylon. The fibre may be of the graded index or core/ cladding type and be constructed entirely of glass, entirely of plastics or of glass and plastics.
