Abstract

1486633 Testing fibre optics POST OFFICE 31 Oct 1975 [7 Oct 1974] 43431/74 Heading G1A In an apparatus for assessing the performance of dielectric optical waveguides 5, light from a tungsten lamp 1 is passed via a variable frequency monochromotor 2 a second order filter and launching optics 11 into the fibre 5. The optical "cladding modes", due to the waveguide's optical cladding, are removed by a "stripper" 6. The remaining radiation modes passing through the guide 5 are then collected by a device 7 containing an index matching liquid in which the fibre is immersed. The output from an associated transducer 8 is fed to a "lock-in" amplifier 9 which also receives a reference signal from a chopper 10 positioned as shown. The amplifier 9's output is supplied to a chart recorder 14 along with 'wavelength markers" from the monochromotor 2. The device for collecting the radiation may be an integrating sphere. In both cases the fibre is immersed in an "indexing matching" liquid of refractive index slightly higher than the fibre core. The launching optics may be used to send light in symmetrically or asymmetrically relative to the fibre, depending upon the modes being investigated. A source of rear illumination 9 is provided to assist in aligning of the optics. Formulae and examples are disclosed.
