Abstract

1486588 Rotary positive-displacement fluid machines TRW Inc 20 Sept 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 41076/74 Heading F1F [Also in Division B7] A control unit 10 e.g. for a power steering system, comprises a gerotor mechanism 35 operated by a shaft 12, e.g. connected to a steering wheel 13, to meter the output flow from a pump 23 to a steering motor 14, a valve 102 distributing liquid to and from the gerotor mechanism, and a valve 41 directing the flow from the gerotor mechanism to one side or the other of motor 14 according to the direction of rotation of shaft 12. Valve 41 may be a rotary sleeve valve, as shown, or a rotary plate valve, Figs. 14 to 16 (not shown). Rotation of shaft 12 rotates outer, internally-lobed gerotor member 36 which causes limited rotational movement and then orbital movement of inner, externally-lobed gerotor member 37 coupled by members 40, 45 to movable valve-member 43 of valve 41. The extent of rotational movement of valve-member 43 depends on the torque applied to shaft 12 thereby controlling the flow to the steering motor and providing "feel". Abutments (80,81), Fig. 4 (not shown), limit the movement of valve-member 43 and a torsion bar 121 acts to bias the valve-member 43 into its neutral position, in which the output of pump 23 is returned to reservoir 27. Distributing valve-member 102 is connected for rotation with gerotor member 36 by screws 40a. If pump 23 fails, steering can still be effected by the pumping action of the gerotor mechanism. In Fig. 13 (not shown), the input shaft is coupled to the gerotor mechanism by a pin (151), and the distributing valve (160) is a plate type. In (Figs. 14 to 16) both the distributing valve (206) and the steering motor control valve (204) are the plate type. In Fig. 17 (not shown), the input shaft is coupled to the inner member of the gerotor mechanism, and the outer member of the mechanism is limited in its rotation, the steering motor control valve and the distributing valve being on opposite sides of the gerotor mechanism. In Figs. 18 and 19 (not shown), the input shaft is connected to the outer gerotor member via a toothed sleeve (401), and the outer member performs a rotating and orbiting movement.
