Abstract

1485952 Knitting RIDLEY SPRIGGS & JOHNSON Ltd 27 Nov 1974 [12 Dec 1973 31 May 1974] 57655/73 Heading D1K A knitted flat blank 7 of waisted shape for a pair of briefs is formed by knitting a preliminary tubular blank on a circular hose machine either wholly by continuous rotary knitting or partly by continuous rotary and partly by reciprocatory knitting, and then slitting the tubular blank lengthwise and opening it out to give the flat blank. In Fig. 3 the blank 6 is produced wholly by rotary knitting with a waisted crotch portion 6c achieved by feeding different yarns and changing the stitch structure to cause a coursewise constriction. Suitably, in the portion 6c, alternate courses are each formed from two yarns - one synthetic and one cotton - knitted together but only at widely spaced wales, giving long floats. Intervening courses are formed from balanced-twist nylon yarns. In adjoining portions 6d, 6e, in every second course only alternate needles knit. Both the portions 6d, e and the portions 6a, 6b which are plain knit, have alternating courses of S and Z twist crepe yarns. In a modification the last-mentioned yarns may replace the balanced twist yarns in the crotch portion. In the Fig. 2 embodiment portion 1 is first knitted by rotary knitting and then two thirds of the needles are progressively put out of action by pickers while a narrowed portion of pouch 3 is knitted in reciprocatory manner. The remaining needles continue to knit a crotch portion in the form of a selvedged loop 4 at the point of the pouch and the other needles are progressively restored to action to complete the pouch 3, the preliminary blank being completed by a rotary knitted portion 2. The blank is then slit from F, F' to E, E' and from B, B', D, D' to A, A', C, C' and opened out to give a flat blank similar to the blank 7. When knitting the tubular preliminary blanks a few needles may be removed or selected not to knit so as to give a line of demarcation for the subsequent slitting step.
