Abstract

1485894 Head-rests GENERAL MOTORS CORP 31 Oct 1975 [5 Nov 1974] 45215/75 Addition to 1447820 Heading A4J [Also in Division B7] The upper end of the vehicle seat head-rest described in the Parent application is connected to the vehicle by a belt 23 which passes over rollers 14, 15 and under a clamp 18 mounted in the-headrest and which is secured at each end to energy absorbing elements 20, 19, mounted on the vehicle roof. The clamp 18 is mounted on a pin 16 fixed to a U-shaped yoke 17 and slidable received in opposed slots 13', 13" in a fixed U-shaped plate. Springs 24 disposed between the yoke and the plate normally hold the clamp away from the rollers to allow adjustment of the seat. However, during sudden jerky backward movement of the head-rest the clamp is pulled by the belt against the springs 24 to a position in which the belt is clamped between the rollers and the clamp thereby holding the head-rest against movement. In such a position energy is absorbed by the deformation of the metal forming the two elements 19, 20.
