Abstract

1485884 Anodes HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 16 JULY 1975 [2 Aug 1974] 29900/75 Heading C7B An anode for a chloro-alkali cell comprises a valve metal (Ti, Ta, Nb or Zr) substrate, a coating thereon of conductive SnO 2 which may contain a minor amount of dopant, and an outer coating of a Pt group metal, alloy or oxide e.g. RuO 2 . The substrate e.g. of Ti may be provided with a Cu core. The dopant may be a fluoride, e.g. of Na, K, Li, Be, Al, Pb, Cr or Ca, hydrazine, phenylhydrazine, phosphorous (oxy)chloride, ammonium phosphate, an organic P ester e.g. tricresyl phosphate, or a compound of Te, W, Sb, Mo and/or As, preferably between 0À1 and 20% Sb 2 O 3 . The substrate may be degreased and etched in oxalic acid, prior to coating e.g. by applying (painting, brushing, dipping, rolling, spraying) a solution of thermally decomposable inorganic or organic salt or ester of Sn and dopant, e.g. their chlorides, alkoxides, alkoxy halides, resinates or amines, such as SnCl 4 , (butyl) 2 SnCl 2 , Sn (EtO) 4 , SbCl 3 or Sb 2 Cl 5 in a C 2-5 alcohol, toluene, benzene or water, drying and heating in an oxidizing atmosphere. The SnO 2 coating may also include up to 3% of a chlorine discharge catalyst e.g. at least one Mn, Fe, Co or Ni difluoride. The outer coating may be applied by electro-plating, chemical deposition, spraying or electro-phoretic deposition. The substrate may be Ti mesh. Comparison anodes are specified containing only a coating of SnO 2 or RuO 2 on Ti.
