Abstract

1485237 Safety mechanism EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 5 Dec 1975 49995/75 Heading F2P In a method for preventing a malfunctioning sealing device being expelled during the laying of a pressurized pipe-line 10, a safety mechanism is placed in front of the sealing device. The safety mechanism comprises a housing ineluding a rear portion 16 and a front portion 14, a plurality of circumferentially arranged gripping jaws 22 extending from the said housing, bumper means 29 extending from the rear portion towards the pressurized section of the pipe-line, rollers 28 on arms 26 connected to the housing to facilitate movement of the mechanism along the pipe-line 10, linkage means 18, 20 connecting the jaws 22 with the front and rear portions so that the jaws can be positioned in retracted or extended positions and means for interconnecting the front and rear portions (such as a spring 24) to maintain the jaws in the retracted position so that if a sealing device is moving along the pipe-line it will strike the bumper plate 30, cause the two portions 14, 16 to move together and thus force the jaws 22 apart, against the pipe inner surface and hold the safety mechanism in place.
