Abstract

1485172 Polyetherimides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 27735/74 Heading C3R A method of making a polyetherimide comprises reacting a tetra-acid with a diamine H 2 N-R<SP>1</SP>-NH 2 in the presence of an organic "non-polar" solvent or a phenolic solvent at at least 130‹C. while removing water of reaction and separating the polyetherimide from the resulting material. In the formulae R is X is C y H 2y , CO, O or S; m is 0 or 1; y is 1 to 5; R 1 is a C 6-20 aromatic hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical, alkylene, C 2-8 alkylene-terminated polydiorganosiloxane radical, C 2-20 cycloalkylene or and Q is as defined for X or is SO 2 . "Non-polar" solvent is defined as nitrobenzene or a solvent having a dielectric constant smaller than that of nitrobenzene. Reference is made to Specifications 1,469,482 and 1,359,415 in respect of the tetra-acids.
