Abstract

1485009 Coating apparatus DECCA Ltd 5 June 1975 [17 June 1974] 26794/74 Heading B2L A thin film is deposited by apparatus comprising a turntable 11 Fig. 1 driven by a motor 2 via a magnetic clutch, and surrounded by an enclosure 15, and a syringe 27 arranged with its outlet 30 filtered and above a conical distributor 31. Air may be drawn via a spindle conduit 34, Fig. 3, and holes 35 and holes 26 over the surface of the disc by a peristaltic pump whose inlet is at aperture 29 in the lid 18 of the casing. The side walls of the casing are lagged and surrounded by a flexible heater tape. A thermometer or thermocouple a thermostat and variable power supply are arranged to provide constant heat. In operation, the film material e.g. polystyrene is dissolved in a solvent e.g. 150-octane, the disc 15 to be coated is placed on the turntable, the distributor 31 tightened, and after the enclosure is shut by the lid 18 solvent is admitted to produce a saturated atmosphere. The disc is rotated, and fluent material distributed over the disc surface. The disc is stopped for five minutes. The disc is then run for one minute at high speed to remove excess material. The disc is stopped for 30 minutes and then the pump and heater are switched on and the film is cured. In an alternative method the first settling period is carried out with the disc rotating slowly. The lid 18 may be coated with an electrically-conductive optically-transmissive material to eliminate static-charge effects; alternatively the lid may be of polished stainless steel.
