Abstract

1485003 Automatic control LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Aug 1974 [3 Aug 1973 21 Nov 1973] 37062/73 and 54259/73 Heading G3N [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] The damping effect of a hydraulic damper 13 in a vehicle suspension is adjusted, in response to signals from a displacement transducer 15 and a vertical acceleration transducer 16 on the vehicle body 11, in such a way that the vertical acceleration achieves a desired value which is a predetermined function of the displacement. The damper 13 has an electromagnetic servovalve 14 in a by-pass circuit. The signal from the displacement transducer 15 is fed to a function generator circuit 17 which provides an output signal corresponding to the desired value of the body acceleration for the given displacement. This output signal-and the signal from the acceleration transducer 16, e.g. an accelerometer, are compared in a circuit 18, and the resulting error signal together with the displacement transducer signal are supplied to a logic circuit 19 which controls the valve 14. The variable damping controls the vertical acceleration to cause the error signal from the circuit 18 to be minimized. The displacement and acceleration signals from all four dampers of the vehicle may be compared and the damping effects varied so as to control pitch and roll as well as vertical acceleration.
