Abstract

1484699 Ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus TOKYO SHIBAURA DENKI KK 9 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973 (4)] 43672/74 Heading G1G In ultrasonic wave diagnostic apparatus, part of a patient's body, e.g. the heart, is scanned by a transmit/receive probe 25, which is driven back and forth at uniform angular speed via pulley system 31, 33 by a galvanometer mechanism 23, consisting, e.g. of a pair of opposed polepieces, a rotatably movable coil mounted on a spindle therebetween (none shown) and driven by a triangular waveform generator to produce sector scanning of the probe 23 over the angle A, Fig. 3. For fast scanning, increased torque may be supplied by two driving galvanometer mechanisms 52, Fig. 9, which drive via pulley 53 and belt 54, probe 51, rotatably mounted in bowl 50, which is in contact with the patient 70. Bowl 50 is filled with an electrically insulating acoustic liquid, e.g. mineral oil, silicone oil or liquid paraffin, which is chosen to have a propagation coefficient which minimizes multiple reflections. Pulley 53 also drives, via belt 56 and pulley 57, potentiometer 55 which provides an output proportional to the probe position to enable synchronization of the display means which may be a C.R.T. as is known. The probe may be moved along orthogonal axes within the apparatus, by screw mechanisms 58, 62, and (59, 65) Fig. 8 (not shown), operating on frame 63, and indicated on pointers 60, 61. The complete scanning head is rotatable about horizontal and vertical axes and its vertical position may be adjusted.
