Abstract

1484089 Controlling IC engines R ALLARD R M ALLARD and P M ALLARD 15 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973 7 Jan 1974 10 May 1974] 49482/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] To promote economical driving of an I.C. engine propelled vehicle three stages of increasing resistance oppose opening of the accelerator. In one arrangement, Fig. 4, a tubular body portion 50 is threadedly attached to the steering column or dashboard 60 of the vehicle and has screwed thereto a further tubular portion 51 having a base 53 through which is slidable a rod 54. The latter is connected to the accelerator pedal by a cable which is slack during initial accelerator opening against its return spring. When the slack has been taken up, further accelerator opening causes movement of rod 54 and its piston 55 against the resistance of a spring 56. Eventually piston 55 engages movable abutment 58 so as to be subject to the increased resistance provided by additional spring 57. The initial compression of springs 56, 57 can be adjusted by nut 59 on rod 54 and by screwing body portions 50, 51 relative to each other. Slack in the cable can be adjusted by screwing portion 50 relative to fixed part 60 using knurled knob 52. Modified arrangements each comprising two springs of different stiffness are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 6, the stages of resistance are provided by a device comprising a rotatable disc mounted on a shaft of the accelerator linkage and having a radial bore 67 containing a spring 68 urging ball 69 against the internal surface 64 of a surrounding casing. Surface 64 is stepped at 65 and 66 such that the resistance to rotation of the disc increases as ball 69 passes each step. The point at which the latter operate can be adjusted by rotating the casing via link 70. The disc may be replaced by a cam, the spring-loaded ball or roller being carried by the casing. The cam may be mounted on the axis of a carburetter throttle valve and be acted upon by a leaf-spring.
