Abstract

1483460 Overbased materials; lubricants; liquid fuels WITCO CHEMICAL CORP 1 July 1974 29163/74 Headings C4X C5F and C5G In the manufacture of magnesium-overbased material, the use of a particular grade of MgO enables the amount of alcohol used to be reduced. This MgO has the following properties: The process then comprises: (a) forming a mixture of (i) 75 to 125 parts of a sulphonic acid or its metal salt or of a mixture of the sulphonic acid or its salt with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or its metal salt, (ii) 20 to 90 parts of the MgO, (iii) 100 to 500 parts of an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent boiling below 150‹ C., (iv) an aliphatic alcohol of one to six carbon atoms or an alkoxyethanol of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, (v) 30 to 50 parts of water, (vi) ammonia or an ammonium compound in an amount equivalent to 0À6 to 9 parts of ammonia and (vii) optionally part or all of the diluent oil referred to at (c) below, (b) treating this mixture with at least one mole of CO 2 per mole of overbasing Mg, (c) adjusting, by addition if necessary, the amount of diluent oil to from 100 to 300 parts, and (d) removing volatiles. The sulphonic acid may be a mahogany acid or one derived from a synthetic hydrocarbon feedstock. The carboxylic acid, if used, may be naphthenic or fatty or a naturally occurring mixture. The diluent oil must boil above 160‹ C. and may be animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic (examples given), and includes any unsulphonated oil present in the sulphonic acid used. Comparative examples use calcium oxide in place of magnesium or aromatic hydrocarbon solvents in place of aliphatic. The overbased materials can be used in lubricants for internal combustion and Diesel engines or as corrosion inhibitors in fuel compositions containing vanadium.
