Abstract
1482990 Controlling air supply to exhaust gas systems NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 28 Aug 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 37655/74 Heading B1W A secondary air supply control device for the exhaust gas cleaning system of an i.c. engine is interposed between the intake system 11 and the exhaust gas purifying system 24 comprises an air pump 30 which generates secondary air under pressure in first conduit 40, a pressure control valve 44 interposed between 40 and the air pump inlet conduit 36 via drain conduit 60, a second conduit 42 connecting the first conduit and the exhaust gas system 24, and a control valve 74 in said second conduit which controls the flow of secondary air into 24 in accordance with the flow of air taken into the engine. Control valve 44 annuls the influence of engine speed when air pump 30 is driven by the i.c. engine and comprises first and second chambers 50 and 52 divided by flexible diaphragm 48 having a valve member 62 mounted thereon which is seatable on 56 to close drain part 58, and biasing means 64 (e.g. a helical spring) which urges 62 onto seat 56. Chamber 52 may communicate via conduit 66 with a vacuum source such as air intake conduit 16 downstream of the throttle valve 20. A valve 68 may be provided in conduit 66 which may be operated by means 70 (e.g. solenoid) in response to sensor 72 programmed to detect abnormal conditions of the exhaust gas. The control valve 74 may be operated in response to engine intake air flow via a mechanical linkage 94 with the throttle valve 20 or (Fig. 2-not shown) via an air pressure linkage with the air intake venturi.
