Abstract

1482718 IC piston engines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 23 Oct 1974 [8 Nov 1973 26 Nov 1973] 45877/74 Heading F1B An I.C. engine comprises a first group of combustion chambers C 1 , C 4 , Fig. 1, supplied with an air/fuel mixture richer than the stoichiometric air to fuel ratio (16:1) and a second group of combustion chambers C 2 , C 3 of a different shape to the first group and supplied with an air/fuel mixture leaner than the stoichiometric ratio. The chambers in the first group may be wedge shaped in crosssection or hemispherical, the spark-plug in each chamber lying close to the piston head at t.d.c. Each chamber in the second group includes an eccentrically disposed pre-combustion chamber 34, Fig. 4, which contains a spark-plug and which facilitates the combustion of the leaner mixture. The exhaust gases from each group of combustion chambers mix and burn in a reburning chamber 56. Catalytic converters 54a, 54b downstream of chamber 56 continue the oxidation of the exhaust gases which are then exhausted to the atmosphere. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the catalytic converter lies in the exhaust pipe and the reburning chamber contains partition walls forming a long exhaust passage, alternatively the reburning chamber may be replaced by an enlarged exhaust manifold.
