Lighting burners by frictional devices; pilot jets.-A valve device for controlling the supply to gas burners of the kind in which some of the burners are controlled by variations in the supply pressure and others by clockwork mechanism has two spring drums, one driving the timing, mechanism the other operating the valves and thespark-producing appliance. The sparking mechanism is actuated by the motor drum which acts through gearing to drive a toothed sector 45, Fig. 2, provided with projections 55, 66 adapted to engage springy levers 57, 68 to actuate the valves 61, 72 controlling the gas supply to the pilot and temporary main burners respectively. The toothed sector assisted by projections 77, 78 also winds the toothed wheel 46 against the action of a spring 49, which when released rotates the friction wheel 50, through toothed and ratchet gearing, against a block of ferro-cerium 52 mounted in a spring- pressed clamp 53 to product a shower of sparks under a hood 95 in proximity to the climbing pilot jet 51. The Specification as open to inspection under- Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a modification in which the sparking mechanism is actuated by the pressure-controlled diaphragm. In this modification the pilot passage has a jet 124<1>, Fig. 11 (Cancelled), in proximity to the sparking-mechanism and has a branch 126 arranged in a tube 125 and provided with a small aperture 127 at its lower end to fill the tube with gas which is ignited by the jet 124<1> and the flame transmitted to the lower .end of the tube 126 which is in proximity to the main burner. The igniting spark is produced by a friction wheel rotated in contact with the ferrocerium block by a spring 135 acting through rack, pinion and ratchet gear 130. The spring is tensioned by a lever 131 adapted to engage, through part of the movement of the actuating diaphragm with a projection 133 carried by the diaphragm. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
