Abstract

1481823 Pigments for paints HAMMAND LEAD PRODUCTS Inc 5 Aug 1974 34470/74 Heading C4A A pigment, consisting essentially of a composite of wollastonite base and calcium phosphate or calcium borate, is rendered capable of combining with and insolubilizing tannins when the pigment is applied to a wood surface as a component of a water-based paint, by incorporating in the pigment at least 5%, by weight of the pigment, of at least one amphoteric compound which is a metal (including silicon) hydroxide, hydrate of a metal oxide or salt of an oxyacid derived therefrom, which amphoteric compound is slightly soluble in water (i.e. the compound is soluble in water but not to such an extent that, when a water-based paint formulation is made comprising the pigment, the paint formulation is unstable). A paint pigment consists essentially of the composite having incorporated therein from 5% to 30% by weight, based on the pigment, of at least one such amphoteric compound. Suitable amphoteric compounds are hydroxides of aluminium, titanium, zinc, zirconium and silicon. In the example, pigments are prepared from wollastonite, slaked lime, phosphonic acid, titania hydrate, titanium hydroxide, zirconia hydrate, silica hydrate and zinc oxyhydrate.
