Abstract

1481140 Welding by fusion; brazing; making consumable wire for welding &c. INST ELECTRO IM E O PATONA AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR 23 May 1975 22980/75 Heading B3R and B3A A consumable wire comprises a metal body 1 having one or more grooves 3 which in cross section narrow towards the surface of the wire to zero the grooves being filled with additives which may include alloying, slagforming, deoxidizing, ionizing or gas forming substances. A process of manufacturing the wire comprises the steps of feeding a round wire 1 (Fig. 6) through straightening rolls 6, passing the wire through rolls 7 which plastically deform the wire to form channels (as in Fig. 8), radially squeezing the wire in a die 8 to form channels which in cross section narrow towards the edge of the wire (Fig. 10), cleaning the wire to remove grease in a cleaning device 9, filling the channels with a pasty additive in a device 10, removing excess additive in a steel nozzle 11, drying the wire in an oven 12, and passing the wire through a two-stage drawing mill 13. The depth and maximum width of each groove is respectively equal to 0À3-0À7 and 0À3-0À8 of the wire radius. The wire may be used for brazing, for surfacing as a consumable electrode or with a non- consumable electrode in a shielding atmosphere or in CO 2 shielded arc welding.
