Abstract

1480634 Reinforced rubber hose PARKERHANNIFIN CORP 30 Aug 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 38053/74 Heading F2P A hose 10 (Fig. 1) comprises a synthetic rubber core tube 11, and a reinforcement layer 13 bonded to the core tube 11 by a bonding agent or adhesive 12. Core tube 11 is extruded by an extruder 16 on to a mandrel and then cured in an oven 19. It is then passed through a tank 20 of bonding agent or adhesive 12, and then covered with a braided yarn 13 by a mechanism 21. The hose is wound on to a reel 23 and the mandrel removed after sufficient ageing of the bonding agent or adhesive has occured. In an alternative arrangement the braid covered hose can be passed through a further tank of bonding agent or adhesive (Fig. 5, not shown) after which a plastics sheath may be extruded over the hose prior to winding the hose on to a reel and removing the mandrel. The mandrel is preferably flexible and made from plastics or elastomer such as nylon, polypropylene, styrene-butadiene copolymer or ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer. The oven 19 can be an autocalve containing high pressure steam, a bath of molten salt, a fluidized bed of heated particles or a device for directing microwaves through the core tube 11. The bonding agent 12 may be a solvent such as toluene or other aromatic hydrocarbon and the adhesive 12 may be an epoxy resin, a blend of nitrile and phenolic resins, a synthetic rubber cement or other resins or cements details of which are given in the Specification. The yarns of the reinforcing covering 13 may be nylon, polyester, cotton, wire or other material and can be braided, knitted or spiral wound. In a further embodiment a plastics liner tube may be provided which tube serves as a mandrel upon which to form the hose. The liner remains within the finished hose. In cases where bonding is not required between adjacent layers of reinforcement or between a layer of reinforcement and a sheath, the coatings of bonding agent or adhesive between such layers or such a layer and a sheath are omitted.
