1480530 Polyolefin/filler composites E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 13 Dec 1974 [14 Dec 1973 (3) 11 March 1974 2 Dec 1974] 53968/74 Heading C3P A polyolefin composite comprises (i) 10-70% by weight of a polyolefin selected from polyethylene, or a copolymer of ethylene containing up to 15% by weight of units derived from at least one 1-alkane of 3 to 10 carbon atoms, having an inherent viscosity (defined) of at least 2À5, (ii) 30-90% by weight of a finely-divided inorganic filler (an inorganic compound which does not contain carbon except as the carbonate) having a neutral-to-acidic surface and a weight average equivalent spherical particle diameter of 0À1-50 Á, and having interacted at its surface (bonded directly or indirectly, preferably through an organoaluminium compound as a monomolecular layer of the filler which contains active polymerization sites such that the transition metal cannot be washed off) sufficient catalytically active transition metal (Group IVa, Va and VIa of the Periodic Table) to provide 0À000001-1À7 millimole of transition metal per gram of filler; wherein said olefin is polymerized on to the surface of said filler, and said composite has a 10-second micronization homogenity (defined) of at least 50% and a micronization homogenity index (defined) of at least 20. The filler may be selected from aluminium silicate clay (kaolinite, attapulgite, fuller's earth, bentonite), alumina hydrates (Al 2 O 3 1À5-3 H 2 O), silicas, water-insoluble silicates, water-insoluble calcium phosphates, titania, zinc oxide, iron oxide and antimony oxide which may have a surface area of 0À01- 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and the filler may also comprise 0-30% by weight of a pigmentary oxide (e.g. titania, zinc, oxide, antimony oxide) free of catalytically active transition metal compound. The composites may be used to form articles; e.g. by subjection, optionally in a mould, to a temperature of 105-250‹ C. and pressures of 10-100,000 p.s.i.g.
