Abstract

1480387 Lubricants ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 25 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 41738/74 Heading C5F A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity, at least one sulphur-containing compound having the structure wherein each R<SP>1</SP> is a monovalent essentially hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, x and y are from 1 to 9, and at least one naphthyl amine having the following structure wherein R<SP>2</SP> is selected from H and R<SP>1</SP>, a is from 0 to 7 and D is R<SP>1</SP>, the sulphur-containing compound and the naphthyl amine being present in an amount sufficient to improve the resistance to oxidation of the lubricating composition. The composition may include (a) various alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphonates, many sulphonic acids for deriving these sulphonates being listed, (b) basic polyamines substituted with long chain hydrocarbons, e.g. polyamino-polyalkylene alkenyl succinimides, (c) phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon polymer, (d) alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phenates or sulphurized phenates, (e) chlorinated hydrocarbonaceous compounds, e.g. chlorinated paraffins, chlorinated olefins, chlorinated polyolefins, chlorinated cycloaiphatic compounds, chlorinated aromatics, chlorinated esters of fatty, naphthenic and resin acids or (f) one or more of other detergents, anti-wear agents, antiforam agents, corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators, pour point depressants, oiliness agents and viscosity index improvers. In Example 3, a composition is discribed containing mineral oil, sulphurized calcium phenate, hydrocarbon olefin polymer containing basic nitrogen, calcium sulphonate, chlorinated paraffin, the sulphur-containing compound and phenyl α-naphthyl amine. In Example 6, a composition is described containing mineral oil, the sulphur-containing compound of Example 3, phenyl α-naphthyl amine, the mineral oil containing tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride, and lauryl oxyacetic acid as rust inhibitors and a silicone antifoam agent. The lubricating compostion may be used for railroad diesel engines, gas turbine and steam turbine engines.
