Abstract

Subaqueous audible signals.-In a subaqueous sound-receiver of small dimensions, the diaphragm 2 carries an insulating, frame 3 supporting a coil 4 which oscillates in the field of an electro-magnet 5. The windings of the coil 4 are attached to one another by varnish or other hard binding-material so as to oscillate as a rigid whole, and the flexible leads are so thin as to cause no injurious damping. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, a pot-shaped electro-magnet is employed, with a central core having a cross-section equal to or greater than that of the outer part; alternatively, a U-shaped magnet may be employed, the oscillating coil being formed like a figure-of-eight to embrace both poles. The frame 3 may be pierced with fine holes, to lessen or adjust the air damping effect. The coil carrier may be constucted as or combined with a tuned oscillating structure. The field winding may be excited by direct or alternating current.
