1479459 Ejectors MOBELL (MARINE) Ltd 5 Nov 1974 [7 Aug 1973] 37416/73 Heading F1E [Also in Division El An underwater trenching machine comprises at least one jet nozzle 3-6 for directing water under pressure on to the sea bed to loosen the material to be excavated therefrom and at least one ejector pump 7 for removing the loosened material, the or each pump 7 having an intake apertured suction head 24 connected by tubular means 25 to an outlet apertured ejector portion 27 that includes means 29 for introducing into the passage therethrough a flow of pressure fluid at a region whence the cross-sectional area of the passage increases in a direction towards the outlet aperture to cause a suction effect at the intake aperture and passage of material through the pump. Preferably the tubular means is a rectilinear tube 25, the longitudinal axis of which is disposed at an angle of between 150 degrees to 160 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the diffuser section. The ejector pump and nozzles may be adjustably mounted on a sled, provided with buoyancy tanks 16 having valve means 17 for permitting variation of the buoyancy of the sled. The sled may be formed by two separate side sub assemblies 9 inter-connected by transverse members 14 adjustably locked to the assemblies 9 to enable lateral of the latter to be varied. Cable guiding rollers 33, 35 can be provided on the sled.
