Abstract

1479447 Chucks JACOBS MFG CO Ltd 23 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 45144/73 Heading B3B A drill chuck comprises a body part 10 in which converging apertures 14 receive respective jaws 16, a nut member 18 rotatably mounted on the body part and having screwthreaded engagement with said jaws for advancing and retracting said jaws 16 to grip or loosen a drill shank, and a locking ring 42, for locking said nut member against rotation when a drill shank is gripped by said jaws by engaging an end surface of a part rotatable with said nut member. The nut member 18 carries a bevel gear element 20 for engagement by a chuck key and a cylindrical sleeve 26. The locking ring 42 has a tapered surface which engages a complementary tapered surface of the sleeve 26 to wedgingly resist rotation thereof. The locking ring 42 is screw threaded on a body part, or a body adaptor part 30, and arranged so that any tendency for the sleeve 26 to rotate to loosen the nut member 18 will tend to tighten the locking ring 42 on to the sleeve 26. Felt washers 44 prevent ingress of dirt. The chuck may be mounted on a driving spindle by means of a threaded recess, a tapered recess, or an externally threaded spigot. The locking ring prevents loosening of the chuck when used on a tool incorporating an impacting mechanism.
