Abstract

1479369 Dicarboxylic acid salts EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 July 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 37148/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Dicarboxylic acid salts, suitable for use as oil-soluble mist inhibitors are prepared by reacting a dicarboxylic acid (C 8 -C 20 ) or anhydride with a Group I or II metal salt of a monocarboxylic acid (C 1 -C 4 ), in the presence of an alkanol or a hydrocarbyl substituted phenol wherein alkanol and/or hydrocarbyl substituent has at least 6 carbon atoms. If the anhydride is used water is present. Azelaic, sebacic, dodecandioic and brassylic acids and dodecyl, tetradecyl and octadecyl succinic acids or dodecenyl, tetradecenyl or tolyl succinic acids may be used. Lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium or barium, magnesium, copper or zinc salts of formic, acetic, propionic or n-butyric acid may be used. The substituted phenol may be p-nonyl, 2,4-dihexyl, p-dodecyl and poctadecyl phenols, and many alcohols are listed. Examples describe the preparation of half and fully neutralized magnesium succinates and their use as an anti-rust additive in mineral oils.
