Abstract
The removal of copper (I) compounds from a reaction mixture which contains water-insoluble organic compounds is effected by adding to the reaction mixture an oxidizing agent which converts the copper (I) compounds to copper (II) compounds which are soluble in the reaction medium. Thereafter, the water-insoluble organic compound is either allowed to crystallize out from the reaction mixture or is precipitated by adding a solvent which does not precipitate the copper (II) compounds. This process permits obtaining the water-insoluble organic compounds in a copper-free form without the effluent being loaded (polluted) with copper by any washing processes. This process is applicable to all reactions in which copper (I) compounds are used as catalysts or reactants and in particular is applicable to processes for the preparation of cyano-containing compounds in which the cyanide group is introduced by replacement of halogen atoms, using copper (I) cyanide.
