Abstract
1478911 Cutting tyres KENNAMETAL Inc 12 June 1974 [16 July 1973] 26004/74 Heading B4B A method of removing tread material from a pneumatic tyre prior to re-treading comprises the steps of rotating an inflated tyre about its axis of rotation and then moving a rotatable cutter 26 having a plurality of cutting elements 50, into contact with the periphery of the tyre to remove therefrom tread material in the form of chips. The apparatus comprises a motor M1 for rotating the tyre, a support 20, 22 for mounting the cutter 26 which is rotated by a motor M2, the support being pivotable about an axis 18 such that the cutter can traverse the surface of the tyre. The cutter 26 comprises a body 28 provided with inclined recesses 40 around its periphery. A cutting disc 50 is provided with a hole 52 for location on a pin 48 fixed in a support member 42, the member being clamped in its recesses by a wedge member 54. The wedge is drawn against the cutting disc by means of a double-ended screw having opposite hand threads. The cutting discs are positioned in their respective support members 42 such that the discs are alternately staggered around the periphery of the disc Fig. 5 (not shown). The cutting disc may be rotated about its pin 48 so as to bring a new portion of its cutting edge into the operative position when wear takes place. The discs may be made from cemented metal carbides, e.g. tungsten or titanium carbide or mixtures thereof.
