Abstract

1478868 Automatic control of position LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 19 Nov 1974 [20 Nov 1973] 50079/74 Heading G3R [Also in Division F2] A rotor 12, e.g. of a centrifuge, is driven and positioned within a stator by a rotating field and a "control" field respectively, the latter field being controlled by voltages proportional to the product of the output of air-gap sensors (not shown) and auxiliary voltages having the frequency of the supply to the rotating field. The effect is that the rotating field is augmented and diminished at the angular positions corresponding to oversize and undersize air-gaps respectively. As shown, the two poles of one of three phases are illustrated; 16 and 17 are the windings for the rotational field and 18 and 19 are control field windings concentric, with the rotor, 18 is shown in Fig. 2A. The alternating factors in the control energizations are displaced by 90 degrees and the corresponding air-gap sensors are arranged orthoganally. The rotor may be squirrel cage, or simply tubular for hysteritic operation. In Fig. 2; 8 and 9 are toothed core rings and 10 is an axial core connecting them to a smooth bore central "return ring" 11. An alternative construction, Fig. 2b (not shown), uses a stepped rotor and it may have only one control winding. In other embodiments there are no separate control windings, their effect being produced by suitable modifications to the energization of the rotating field windings. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a three phase supply is converted to six for supply to bi-polar windings, the respective star points of which are interconnected through amplifiers by which the control currents are impressed and Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown), illustrate variations of this form using various combinations of phases and poles.
