Abstract

147,867. Fairlie, A. M. March 23, 1918, [Convention date]. Scrubbers.-A filling for towers in which gas is brought into intimate contact with liquid comprises units having hexagonal, or square sides, or otherwise constructed so that they may be fitted against each other without leaving spaces, such units being hollow and having central pillars with helical vanes filling their entire cross-section, or the pillars may be dispensed with. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hollow hexagonal body 1 contains a helical vane 2 carried by a pillar 3, the sides 4 being closed and the sides 5 open to make the unit lighter. When fitted together, Fig. 7, the open sides of one unit are arranged against the closed sides of the adjacent unit. The vanes may be made removable from the body, and may be scored radially or helically, or roughened; or they may be constructed in radial steps to afford a broken surface for the liquid to flow over.
