Abstract

1478198 Moulding compositions MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 32744/74 Heading C3C A moulding composition comprises, based on the weight of the solids in the composition. 10-75% by weight organic fibrous material, 5-50% by weight of an inorganic material containing voids (i.e. porous or hollow particles) which have an apparent specific gravity of less than 1À0, and 20-80% by weight of an olefin polymer fibre which has a melting point lower than the melting point or decomposition point of said organic fibrous material. The porous inorganic material may be selected from expanded volcanic glass (perlite, vermiculite), expanded shale and expanded volcanic ash of particle size 30-2000 microns, preferably of specific gravity 0À01-0À7. The olefin polymer may be selected from polypropylene, poly-1- butene, ethylene/propylene copolymer, ethylene/1-butene copolymer and, especially polyethylene of melt index 0À5-1000 and the organic fibres may be cellulose (wood pulp and bark fibre pulp), wool, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic fibres, nylon and polyester. The organic fibres and polyolefin fibres (having a melting point preferably at least 20‹ C. below the melting, or decomposition, point of the organic fibre) are preferably of length 0À5-50 mm length and 20-200 microns in thickness. The polyolefin fibres are preferably obtained by " flashing " polyolefin held under pressure at elevated temperature in the presence of a volatile liquid (solvent, non-solvent and mixtures thereof) through a nozzle into a zone of lower pressure. The polyolefin fibres may have been treated with an agent to improve their water-dispersibility (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol). Moulded articles (e.g. flower-points, food containers) having a porosity 1-3000 Galley seconds (defined by test) are obtained. In the examples, cups are obtained by vacuum moulding from (1) polyethylene fibres, bleached softwood pulp, expanded volcanic ash and red, iron oxide, (2) polypropylene fibres, hardwood pulp and expanded volcanic ash, the specific gravity of cup (1) being 0À4.
