Abstract

1478013 Fuel injection engines PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 9 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 33568/73 Heading F1B Fuel is injected into a pre-combustion chamber 8 and a combustion chamber 7 which communicate through a passage 10 by respective injectors 11 and 13. The injector 13 injects simultaneously with the emergence of gas from the passage 10 resulting from the ignition of fuel previously injected by the injector 11. A spiral inlet passage (16), Fig. 3 (not shown), may provide air swirl in the main combustion chamber. The piston may define a toroidal main combustion chamber (30), Fig. 5 (not shown), and the main combustion chamber injector (20), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be located adjacent the cylinder axis and produce four fuel jets. The main combustion chamber injector (35), (Fig. 5), may be located on the cylinder axis and the outlet (33) of the pre-combustion chamber (31) may open substantially tangentially into the cylinder 2 and substantially parallel to the base of the cylinder head 3. The injectors 11 and 13 may be supplied by respective injection pumps, the former injecting before the latter, or by dividing a single metered charge between the injectors. A four cylinder engine may be supplied by an injection pump with eight pumping elements.
