Abstract

147,773. Apple, V. G. Dec. 30, 1916, [Convention date]. Cores; insulation.-The armature conductors and core laminµ are fixed together to form a rigid structure by the application of a cementitious insulating-fluid which is subsequently hardened by heating. The conductors 5, 6, which may be straight copper bars or of " hairpin " form, are covered for a portion of their length with absorbent material 9 and impregnated with heathardening insulation, leaving bare ends 10, 11. The ends 11 are threaded into openings in a round block 14 which rests on the ram 17 of an hydraulic press and the laminµ, either of round or segmental form, previously coated with heat-hardening insulation, are threaded over the conductors to build up the core. The ram 17 is next raised by opening the valve 25 causing the ends 10 of the conductor to enter perforations 21 in the head of the press and compressing the laminµ together, the excess of insulating-fluid filling the spaces in the core slots. Vertically hinged doors 27 are then closed round the armature structure, and heat is applied by a. burner 32, the baking being continued while the laminµ are under pressure. After removal from the press, the armature may be heated again in an oven or in a current of hot air, or by passing an electric current through the conductors.
