Abstract
1477344 Thermoplastic block copolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 30 Sept 1974 [29 Sept 1973 5 Oct 1973] 42297/74 Heading C3P A block copolymer comprising 65 to 90% of an alkenylaromatic monomer and 10 to 35% of a conjugated diene monomer contains at least one vinylic block obtained from one or more of the alkenylaromatic monomers only and at least one terminal copolymer block of the diene and the alkenylaromatic monomer, the vinylic block(s) containing 35 to 90% of the total alkenyl aromatic monomer in the polymer, and the ratio of the alkenyl aromatic monomer to the conjugated diene being from 0À2 ; 1 to 3À0 ; 1 in each copolymer block. The block copolymers are obtained by sequential polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent using an organolithium initiator, and in the presence of a Lewis base, e.g. an ether or amine, in at least the copolymer block formation stage(s). Two or three stage organomonolithium- and two stage organodilithium-initiated polymerizations are referred to. In the examples, styrene-b-styrene-co-butadiene and styrene-cobutadiene - b - styrene - b - styrene - co - butadiene block copolymers are prepared by sequential polymerization using n-butyl Li or oligo-isoprenyl-of oligobutadienyl-diLiinhexane or benzene containing minor amounts of tetrahydrofuran.
