Abstract

1477051 X-ray tubes; transformers J P GOLDEN 8 July 1974 [9 July 1973] 30181/74 Headings H1D and HIT [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] An x-ray source comprises a transformer 50 having cylindrical primary and secondary windings 127, 126 encircled by cores 130 spaced around the windings, a cylindrically wound spiral foil capacitor 52 and an X-ray tube 54 all of which are coaxially arranged in a cylindrical metal canister 36. The capacitor and transformer are part of the power supply for the tube, see Division H2. The canister 36 which is in two parts 44, 46 screwed together is oil filled and has an expansion diaphragm 66 In use the canister 36 is enclosed in a rectangular portable housing (12) Fig. 1 (not shown) which also contains the remainder of the power supply and control circuitry. The X-ray tube 54 is of the type having a tungsten anode 92 mounted in a reentrant part of the envelope 55 and a cathode assembly 98 shown in detail in Fig. 6. Two annular discs 142, 144 of woven carbonaceous material, e.g. graphite fabric, have internal diameters such as to be equidistant from the pointed anode 92. The transformer 50, Figs. 2 and 5, comprises primary and secondary windings 127, 126 and cores 130 as aforesaid, each core comprising two C-sections of laminated silicon-oriented steel held together by a plated steel band 132. Other components of the power supply indicated by 138a to 138d can be secured to the transformer. The primary winding is in sections of 250 turns and two of 65 turns while the secondary has 26,000 turns. The X-ray source is used in a pulsed mode and a control system is described which operates by counting the pulses to give a desired exposure
