1476636 Seaming non-metallic sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Oct 1974 [7 Nov 1973] 51592/73 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A plastics film container has an end closed by a bead seal formed between the opposed edges of the end and by the end then being folded over at least twice and secured in position by a strip of flexible sheet material adhered along the whole length of the end and extending from one wall over the folded over end to the other wall of the container. The strip may be applied to one wall of the container after the first fold and the end and strip then folded about a centre line of the strip which may be located above or beneath the positions of the bead seal after the first fold. The two folds may be in the same or opposite directions. There may be more than 2 folds. The first and perhaps the second fold may be adhered to the wall of the container, for example by a vinylidene chloride copolymer coating. The strip may comprise a self adhesive tape, a heat sealable tape or a polyester heat seal coated tape. The tape may be of the same material, for example polyethylene terephthalate, as the film, or of paper, or woven or bonded fabric. The bead seal may be formed by radiant, or hot air heating of clamped edges, or by simultaneously or successively severing and sealing a continuous web. The container may be sealed at both ends and then be filled with a carbonated beverage as in Specification 1,251,672. Alternatively the end of a gusseted bag for heavy mobile contents may be closed in this way.
