Abstract

1476626 Modifying keratinous material I W S NOMINEE CO Ltd and CIBA-GEIGY AG 13 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 29638/73 Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] Keratinous material is treated with a composition comprising a solution in an organic solvent or an aqueous emulsion comprising (i) a polythiol having at least two thiol groups per molecule, a molecular weight of from 400 to 20,000 and being derived from (a) a polyalcohol, (b) an alkylene oxide and/or a dicarboxylic acid, and (c 1 ) a thiol-group containing carboxylic acid or (c 2 ) an epihalohydrin and an alkali metal sulphide or hydrosulphide, or being derived from (a 1 ) a polycarboxlic acid, (b 1 ) an alkylene oxide or a dialcohol, and (c 1 ) a thiol-group containing carboxylic acid, and (ii) a monomeric light stabilizer, the weight ratio of (i):(ii) being 0.5 to 5:0.01 to 0.2. The composition may also contain a condensation product of (1) dicyandiamide, cyanamide or another bifunctional compound, (2) a polyamine containing at least three primary and/or secondary amino groups and (3) an epihalohydrin. The Examples describe impregnating a woollen fabric with compositions comprising (i) a polythiol derived from glycerol and propylene oxide and either thioglycollic acid or epichlorohydrin and sodium sulphide and (ii) a light stabilizer, e.g. 1, 1, 1-tris (3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methylphenyl) butane, optionally with a surfactant, sodium carbonate and one of the above condensation products, e.g. derived from diethylene triamine, dicyandiamide, dimethyl adipate and epichlorohydrin.
