Abstract

1475976 Rail vehicle wheels MESSERSCHMITT BOLKOW BLOHM GmbH 11 Feb 1976 [24 Feb 1975 13 March 1975] 05427/76 Heading B7C A rail vehicle wheel has at least part of its rail contacting surface formed of titanium or a titanium alloy, e.g. Ti-6Al-4V. The Ti or Ti alloy may be applied as a coating 5 on the wheel tyre, with the wheel being made of steel or light metal, e.g. an aluminium alloy, and either being of integral construction or having a separately formed tyre 4 retained on the wheel body 1 by a circlip 3 as shown. The coating 5 may be formed by a metal spraying process, the coating and/or the base metal being heated after application of the coating so that the coating material diffuses into the base metal or vice versa to secure the coating to the wheel. Alternatively the Ti or Ti alloy may form the whole of the separately formed tyre 4 or the whole of the wheel if the latter is of integral construction.
