Abstract
1475805 Pinning extruded film IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 July 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 34337/74 Heading B5B [Also in Division H1] In manufacturing a polymeric film, e.g. of PTFE or a wide variety of polymeric or copolymeric plastics, an extruded molten film is passed across a grounded cooled casting surface to which it is electrostatically adherent; an electrode being positioned proximate to the contact region of the film and the surface to deposit charge on the film and being energized with alternating voltage of asymmetrical or symmetrical waveform such that the voltage exceeds corona inception for at least 75% of each half cycle and discharge is inhibited for at least 10 Ás per half cycle; and the frequency does not exceed that at which positive and negative charges of the electrode are prevented from traversing the film to electrode space before polarity change of the electrode voltage. Film is extruded through a slotted die spaced closely to the casting surface, which may be a moving belt or a smooth metal, e.g. steel roller which is water cooled to a required temperature. A pinning electrode is disposed traversely of the film proximate to the contact region of the surface. The electrode may be of wire, knife edge, or comb form made of, e.g. stainless steel, tungsten, nickel iron alloy or chrome alloy with its marginal regions insulated with, e.g. PTFE. A wire electrode may be continuously drawn across the film from a new supply, or may circulate continuously through a cleaning bath to remove deposits. Alternatively a gas or air blast may be directed between the electrode and the film, or the electrode may be heated to prevent deposition of foreign matter. The applied voltage between the electrode and the drum may be of a waveform which is asymmetrically sinusoidal, square wave, trapezoidal wave, or modified squarewave or trapezoidal waveform derived from a pulse generator, power amplifier, and transformer (Figs. 1 to 4, not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,446,596 and 1,129,136.
