Heating by electricity.-In a portable arc welding apparatus of the type which carries rolls movable along the work, the rolls are rotated by driving-gear to effect the traverse of the apparatus either alone or in conjunction with hand traverse. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a metal electrode 12 is fed either by hand or by a roll 15 driven by a motor through a flexible shaft 16 passing through the handle 17 of a support 18, which carries a roll 19 rotated by a friction or toothed wheel 20 engaging the roll 15. In the form shown in Fig. 2 for vertical or overhead welding, the roll 27 is driven by a worm gear 28, 29 operated by a handle 30 and a carbon electrode 23 and a welding wire 24 are fed by an electric motor 32. The apparatus is held by the handle 31. The rolls may run along a guide such as a rail secured to the work, and the rolls or supports therefor may be removable to facilitate welding in narrow spaces.
