Abstract
1475313 Runways DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 15 Oct 1974 [25 Oct 1973] 49669/73 Heading B7G The take-off distance and load-carrying capabilities of a STOL aircraft equipped with velocity-independent attitude controls are improved by accelerating the aircraft up an inclined runway. The aircraft remains airborne after leaving the runway by the vertical component of its forward velocity until sufficient aerodynamic lift is generated. The runway is inclined at an angle of 10 to 35 degrees to the horizontal and may be provided with tracks or rails. The runway has an upwardly curved section 4 which merges into an inclined straight section 5, and the runway may terminate at the top of the inclined section with a reverse curved lip (not shown).
