Abstract

1474932 Ultrasonic probes LLOYDS REGISTER OF SHIPPING TRUST CORP Ltd 13 March 1975 [4 April 1974] 15015/74 Heading H4J An ultrasonic probe incorporates a wedge of polybutadiene rubber. A wedge of polybutadiene rubber has a face 13 in contact with an article 14 to be flaw tested and which makes an angle A with the face against which a piezoelectric transducer 11 abuts. If article 14 is of aluminium bronze, sound vibrations travel along the surface to be reflected at a surface crack 15. If article 14 is of polyethylene vibrations enter the surface at an angle of about 70 degrees to be reflected from a below surface crack. The wedge is particularly useful in flaw testing of castings such as ships' propellers, the attenuation of sound waves in polybutadiene rubber being sufficiently low. Another application is to the flaw detecting of poly. ethylene gas pipe liners.
