1474551 Treating waste water and sewage MODOKEMI AB 4 April 1974 [5 April 1973] 15115/74 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Suspended matter (e.g. clay) in waste water or sewage is flocculated by adding a cellulose ether having a degree of polymerization of 100- 5000 and containing substituents of formula where a and b, which may be the same or different each is 2, 3 or 4, c is an integer from 1 to 20; m and p, which may be the same of different each is 0, 1, 2 or 3; n is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5; q is 0 or 1 A represents a hydrocarbon residue A 1 having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or A 1 -O-, where A 1 is as defined above, A 1 being optionally substituted by one or more hydroxyl groups; R 1 and R 2 which may be the same or different each represents a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or a substituted hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms and having one or more ether linkages and/or one or more primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups, or R 1 and R 2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are linked represents a heterocyclic ring containing one or more hetero atoms of which at least one is nitrogen; and R 3 represents hydrogen, CONH 2 or CN or COOH or a salt thereof, said cellulose ether being one in which the number of nitrogen atoms from the group per anhydroglucose unit is 0À01-1À0, the average number of CONH 2 , CN or COOH groups per anhydroglucose unit is 0 to 1À0 and the average of m+p+q is 0À5-5À0.
