Abstract

147,450. Atlas Metallindustrie Ges. June 11, 1918, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Compulsory differential driving.-The differential shafts of endless-track vehicles are connected by gear trains including friction clutches, by the engagement of which relative rotation is imposed on one shaft with respect to the other to effect the steering of the vehicle. The differential shafts 11, 12 are connected by chain-gearing 22 - - 29 with solid and hollow shafts 13, 14, 30, 31 fitted with friction clutches 32, 33. On throwing-in the clutch 32 the differential shafts are connected through the gear train 22, 26, 27, 23. Similarly, the engagement of the clutch 33 effects the connexion through the gear train 24, 28, 29, 25. By these means the shaft 11 may be made to turn faster or slower than the shaft 12 and the vehicle thereby steered. The tracks are driven from the shafts 11, 12 by chain gearing. In a modification one of the differential shafts is geared with co-axial solid and hollow shafts, the other differential shaft being geared to a shaft which can be clutched to either the hollow or solid shafts.
