Abstract

1474471 Rotary drum coolers UNION CORP 16 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 21681/74 Heading F4H Scrap metal to be rendered brittle by cooling, or other material to be cooled, is passed through a rotary drum cooler 10 having an internal helical blade 14 for its advancement from an inlet shoot 60 passing through an inlet header 62 to a discharge shoot 120 in countercurrent flow to a liquefied refrigerant, e.g. nitrogen introduced through upper nozzles 102 for evaporation in the drum. A portion of the evolved gas is recycled from the inlet region through an external duct 112 under the influence of a fan 90 for reintroduction at the outlet end of the drum through a nozzle 114 as shown or through an ejector device, Figs. 5 and 6. The drum is thermally insulated and is supported for rotation on rings having a thermally insulated forcetransmitting member and engaged by motor driven rollers 40 driven by a variable speed motor 50 to control the rotational speed of the drum and the speed of advancement of the material. The inlet has a lock chamber device formed by two pivoted doors 74, 76 and a similar door or doors 119 closes the outlet. The inlet is stationary and a heating member 65 is positioned between the relatively movable walls of the inlet and drum, which member may be an electrically heated tape.
