Abstract

1474114 Credit card verification W E CUTTILL and V M WAGNER 4 May 1974 [4 May 1973] 17041/74 Heading G4H A credit card verification system is designed to accept cards 22 bearing indicia in the form of inserts 23 or 23a having relatively high and low dielectric constants. The card may be of laminated plastics material containing the indicia therebetween; the indicia 23 may be covered by electrically conductive opaque material 33 so that their arrangement cannot be seen by a user of the card. The indicia are sensed by the circuit of Fig. 3 (and other figures, not shown) which includes a Schmitt trigger 52, and the resulting data is compared with data entered manually by the user. If there is agreement, then the apparatus incorporating the verification system (as described this is a vending machine) is enabled. The verification circuitry includes counters to count the numbers of successful or unsuccessful comparisons; in the event of too many unsuccessful comparisons an alarm signal is produced and the card is trapped in the machine. As described, the card contains an indicium LO which is used to check that the card has been correctly placed in the machine; it also contains embossed data used by the verification system to print a bill for the card user when he has completed his transactions.
