Abstract

1473951 Exhaust gas catalysts WESTERN ELECTRIC CO INC 29 May 1974 [29 May 1973 2 July 1973] 23711/74 Heading BIE [Also in Division Cl] A catalyst compositions for treatment of I.C. engine exhaust gases is a perovskite-like manganite of formula wherein RE = a rare earth metal selected from La, Pr and Nd, M is at least one of Na, K, Rb and Cs, x is 0.1 to 0.4 and in which the amount of any cation may be reduced by up to 15 atom percent to accommodate vacancy structures. The catalyst may be supported, e.g. on alumina. The catalyst may be used as the sole catalyst of a single stage treatment of the exhaust gases or in both stages of a sequential reduction then oxidation treatment of the exhaust gases or it may be used in the reduction stage only, the subsequent oxidation stage using a different catalyst, e.g. a perovskite-like manganite of formula wherein RE = La, Pr and/or Nd, M = Pb, Ca, Sr, Ba and/or one or more elements which occupy dodecahedral sites as partial replacement of RE as monovalent ions, x is from 0.05 to 0.7, y is from 0 to 0.15 and z is 0 to 0.15 (but y and/or z is at least 0.005). The catalysts may be acid etched to improve activity.
