Abstract

1473362 Treating textiles DAIDO-MARUTA FINISHING CO Ltd 31 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973 (2)] 33844/74 Heading D1P Cellulosic fibre products are rendered resistant to wet and dry creasing, shrinkage and surface abrasion, rendered soft to the touch and given increased tensile strength by treatment with a solution or dispersion of a filmforming glycidyl-containing thermoplastic polymer having a glass transition temperature of not more than 30‹C and a molecular weight of at least 10000, drying the product and then heating it to clear the oxirane bond of the glycidyl group. Woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics and yarns, comprising cotton, flax, rayon, cellulose ester or cellulose ether fibres, optionally blended with polyester, polyamide, acrylic, vinylic and benzoate synthetic fibres may be treated. The polymer is preferably a copolymer of 1 to 55% of one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing a glycidyl group with one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The glycidyl monomers are glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, allyl glycidyl ether, glycidyl crotonate, #, # dichloro glycidyl acrylate, vinyl glycidyl ether or other ester or ether of formula: where each of R 1 to R 8 is a hydrogen atom or a substituent which does not participate in the polymerisation reaction, such as Cl, Br, F, Me or Et, and n is 0 or 1. When R 1 to R 8 are halogen the resulting polymer is also a fire-retardant. The other monomer is preferably 2-ethylhexyl acrylate but many other olefins, vinyl compounds and unsaturated acids, esters and amides are specified. Preferably the polymer is applied to the fabric by immersion, padding, spraying or coating, using an aqueous dispersion, but solution or dispersion in specified non - aqueous liquids is possible. The polymer concentration is 0.1 to 50% by weight and the wet pick-up 30 to 300% by weight. Pre-drying is carried out at 80 to 120‹C. The oxirane bond is cleared by heating in the presence of an acid catalyst to 120 to 190‹C for 0.5 to 15 minutes, preferably whilst being pin centred 15% in the weft direction. The treating liquid may also contain 0.5 to 30% by wt. of an N-methylol compound obtained by substituting at least two methylol groups for hydrogen atoms attached to nitrogen in urea, ethyleneurea, propyleneurea, melamine, triazone, urone, triazine, alkylcarbamates, dihydroxyethylene urea, acetylene diurea, ethylene thiourea, thiourea glyoxal monoureine or alkyltriazineurones. Alkyl ether derivatives of the N-methylol compounds and urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde precondensates may also be used.
