Abstract

1472630 Composite flexible tube MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 12 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 39729/74 Heading F2P A composite flexible tube (Fig. 1) comprises an inner flexible tube 1 provided with a continuous helical rib 2, and a metal tape 3 helically wrapped around said inner tube 1 and situated between adjacent turns of said rib 2. The tape is bonded or fastened to the inner tube 1 at spaced points, at opposite ends of the tape or along its entire length. The height of the rib 2 may be the same as or different from the thickness of the tape. The inner flexible tube 1 may be made of rubber or a flexible synthetic resin such as P.V.C. or polyurethane and the tape 3 may be of steel. A method of manufacture (Fig. 4) includes cutting a helical groove 8 through the wall of a steel tube 6 and then inserting and simultaneously rotating the flexible inner tube 1 into the steel tube 6 thus fitting the rib 2 into the helical groove 8. Connecting flanges (Fig. 2, not shown) may be secured to the ends of the finished composite tube.
