Abstract

1472583 Self cleaning filter B L LEGRAS 23 July 1974 [2 Aug 1973] 32565/74 Heading B1D A cleansable filter comprises a tubular filter screen 9 inside a tubular filter body 1, and a helical brush 12 mounted along the axis of the tubular body and inside the tubular screen 9. Liquid flows through a lateral inlet 5 then downwardly into tubular screen and outwardly through the screen to an outer concentric chamber 11 to lateral exit 6. The filter is cleaned by opening a valved bottom outlet 7 and rotating the helical brush so that the inside of the screen is brushed. and the brush helix assists downward flow through the valved bottom outlet. A turbine 30 (Fig. 3 not shown) may be in series with the bottom outlet and operated by the flow therethrough may rotate the helical brush through pulleys and belts on the brush may be rotated by a handle 24. The valve at the bottom of the filter may be a gate valve openated by a sensor monitoring the pressure drop across the filter screen. The screen is of three cylindrical layers, an outer of e.g. stainless steel sheet having square holes of 12 mm wide, an intermediate of e.g. stainless steel gauze or perforated sheet with e.g. square holes of 1 mm side, and an inner of stainless steel Teflon RTM coated or other synthetic gauze having e.g. 80-90 micron apertures. The upper and lower annular extremities of the screen have U section stainless steel hoops which are sealingly seated on annular abutments the. upper hoop. forced downwardly by a spring 28 on a tensioning screwed plate 62 (Fig. 2a not shown). The filter is intended for agricultural irrigation.
