Abstract

1471965 Indicating measurement; speedometers F W PHILLIPS 14 Feb 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 49454/74 Headings G1A, G1J and G1K] Warning apparatus for use with a measuring and indicating instrument, e.g. an echo sounder or a speedometer, to give warning when the measured value reaches a predetermined value comprises a sensing unit 1 connected by an electric cable 3 to a main housing 2, the sensing unit 1 being small relative to the main housing and having means 5, 7 whereby it may be secured to or adjacent the measuring and indicating instrument, the sensing unit also having a photo-sensitive element 13 which receives light from a moving indicator of the instrument when the indicator reaches a predetermined point in its path of travel, the position of the photo-sensitive element along said path of travel being readily adjustable, and the photosensitive element 13 when activated by light from the indicator producing a signal which acts via suitable circuitry to operate a visible and/or audible warning device 21. As shown, the sensing unit 1 has a groove 5 and clamping screw 7 by which it may be clamped to the rim of an instrument dial. Alternatively a suction cup may be used, or the unit 1 may be fixed and the photo-sensitive element movable relative to the casing 4 of the unit. The photo-sensitive element 13 is a photo-diode with an integrated circuit so that it produces a high frequency "high-low" output when subject to light above a certain intensity. This output passes via a resistor 19 to the base of a transistor 18 to cause a high frequency pulsed D.C. supply to energize a ceramic transducer 21 which emits an audible warning tone. The element 13 is in the casing 4, all the other circuit elements and the batteries 17 being housed in the main housing 2. The indicator of the measuring instrument may be a light spot or an expanding line of light projected on to a translucent scale, or a white pointer moving over a dark background. In the latter case, the unit 1 may contain a lamp to illuminate the pointer as it passes the sensing unit.
